Syllabus Technique Classes

Our Ballroom Syllabus Technique Classes build strong foundations in Ballroom and Latin through structured, level-based training. Students develop essential skills such as timing, footwork, posture, coordination, musicality, and confidence in a focused and supportive environment.

Syllabus Class Descriptions

A fun introduction to ballroom dance for young students in an upbeat, encouraging, and structured environment. Builds rhythm, posture, and social skills while introducing beginner ballroom steps and movement patterns. Required for Pee Wee Showdance Team members.
Helps dancers build a strong ballroom foundation while increasing confidence and technical skill in a structured environment through targeted drills, choreography, and combination work. Pre-Teen Syllabus Latin & Standard Technique (2-days/wk) is the required class for Pre-Teen A & B Team members.
Designed for dancers advancing their ballroom training with stronger technique and discipline, with a focus on stylistic and competitive development through more complex drills, choreography, and combination work. Junior Syllabus Latin & Standard Technique (2 days/wk) is the required class for Junior B Team members.
Advanced foundational ballroom training for high school dancers building strength, precision, and confidence. Focuses on refining technique, musicality, styling, coordination, and competitive development while preparing dancers for higher-level training.

Open Technique Classes

Designed for experienced dancers progressing beyond syllabus training, these classes focus on advanced technique, styling, musicality, and competition readiness. Training includes targeted drills and combinations that accelerate technical development and artistry.

Note on Placement: To maintain the high standard of our technique program, placement in all Open Technique classes is determined by a free instructor assessment. Open Technique + Elite Training Descriptions

Designed for dedicated Junior dancers ready to refine technique and move beyond syllabus basics. This high-intensity class enhances student’s technical precision and stamina through rigorous drills and complex combinations.
Required for Junior A Team members.
An advanced-level track for Youth dancers committed to elite technical development. This class focuses on the “extra mile”—refining movement quality, endurance, and artistic mastery through high-level drills and combinations that challenge execution and control. It is designed for the hardworking dancer looking to bridge the gap between skill and competitive excellence. Required for Youth B Team members.
Our most advanced technical class offered for committed Youth dancers. This class requires maximum precision, artistic maturity, and an enduring work ethic. Dancers will be trained at an accelerated learning pace to execute complex combinations with consistent power and clarity. This class is reserved for those pursuing elite level technical mastery and competition-focused training. Required for Youth A Team members.

  • Our Elite Competitive Training Program is for dedicated dancers ready to increase their training to accelerate technical development, competitive skills, and performance quality. This program provides 4 weekly Open Technique classes focused on advanced technique, styling, musicality, and artistry, plus 3 supervised competition rounds to strengthen competition readiness.
  • Our focused approach supports consistent improvement while maintaining a sustainable training balance.

*Registration for this Training Program also includes access to the 3 Competition Rounds listed below. No separate registration is required.

Competition Rounds

Competition Rounds classes are designed to help dancers build the stamina, consistency, and performance quality needed for competition. During these weekly sessions, students dance their competition routines under teacher supervision while also participating in conditioning and training exercises focused on endurance, technique, and competitive performance readiness.

Competition Teams

The Island Style Ballroom Dance Company is one of Utah’s largest youth ballroom dance programs, offering high-level training and performance opportunities for dancers in grades K–12. Our program provides a structured and supportive environment where students develop strong technique, teamwork, discipline, confidence, and performance skills through both Ballroom and Latin dance styles. Dancers have opportunities to compete, perform, and be part of an exciting team atmosphere while progressing through multiple levels of training.

Island Style is proud to be home to nationally recognized teams:

  • Pre-Teen A Team: 4-time United States National Division I Formation Champions
  • Junior A Team: 2026 United States National Division I Ballroom Formation Champions

Competition Team Information

For students interested in joining our Competition Ballroom Teams, all team information can be found on our Ballroom Team Page. There you will find audition details, team policies, our team contract, team calendars, and other important resources to help students and families stay informed and prepared throughout the season.

Placement on our Competition Ballroom Teams is by audition only. Our general team auditions are held each year in May, though interested dancers may also be considered throughout the year based on availability and placement needs.
