Dance is life for Kelani Podzikowski. She started dancing hula when she was three years old and was performing on stage with Island Magic by the age of five. She started ballroom in fifth grade at Cherry Hill Elementary School and since then was a member of the Timpview High School Varsity Ballroom Team for two years, the Pleasant Grove High School Varsity Ballroom Team for one year, and the BYU Youth Dancesport program for three years. She has assisted in dance classes at Island Style Dance Studio for three years and was also a ballroom teacher’s assistant at Lakeridge Junior High School.
Kelani decided at a young age that she wanted to pursue dance as a career. She began training competitively in open styles of ballroom, training with coaches like Andrea Hale Tatton, Sasha Altukhov, Lela Weinert, Shala Hanks, Oskar Wojciechowski, Karolina Holody, Jonathan Wilkins, Jonathan Roberts, Pasha Pashkov, Daniella Karagach. Kelani also has trained privately in contemporary, ballet, jazz, and hip hop for four years. She was a finalist in Youth Pre-Champ Ballroom and Latin at the NV Ball Championships in 2015. She has trained in hip hop with Michael Swasey “Third Degree” and Estevon “Eboogie” Scruggs and currently teaches our beginning hip hop class.
Although dance is such a big part of her life, Kelani also found time to swim competitively on her high school swim team and recently earned her second-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate after twelve years of training.
